    NUECES COUNTY, TEXAS -- July 27, 2023. The United States Marine Corps’ Third Civil Affairs Group and Sixth Communication Battalion have embarked on a transformative mission in Nueces County, Texas, as part of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program. This training initiative aims to provide essential support and assistance to the local community through pop-up no-cost clinics for the entire Coastal Bend region, as well as community assessment programs to assist Nueces County in identifying needs within Colonias in the area, enabling Nueces County to target assistance for future grants and initiatives

    The collaboration between the Marine Corps and Nueces County signifies the unwavering commitment of the DoD to support the civilian population they serve, and IRT is one such iniatitve. Through this, the Marine Corps showcases its dedication to fostering stronger ties with the community while addressing critical needs.

    Notably, after the completion of the mission, the United States Marine Corps took their commitment to the next level by raising $6,106.00 to contribute back to the local school. This generous donation will be used to provide much-needed materials, such as markers, paper, pencils, and other essential supplies, to support the education of students in the area. This gesture demonstrates the Marines' genuine concern for the well-being of the community's youth and their recognition of education's vital role in empowering future generations.

    Lieutenant Colonel Nathan E. Werve, commander of the United States Marine Corps’ Third Civil Affairs Group, expressed the pride felt by the Marine Corps members in being able to contribute positively to the Nueces County community. He stated, "Our Marines take great pride in not only defending our nation but also in assisting and uplifting the communities we serve. The Innovative Readiness Training in Nueces County has been an enriching experience for all involved, and we are thrilled to give back to the local school and help provide a conducive learning environment for the students."

    West Oso Junior High School Principal Dana Moore, after being moved to tears by the gift, commented “we are so thankful for the military men and women who have dedicated their time to serve our community by providing much needed services…crucial to the quality of life for so many. We are grateful for the donation that will support teachers, students, and the community throughout the school year. The thoughtfulness of this donation means the world to us as a school and community. Our teachers will be able to start the year off with the needed supplies and equipment needed for their classrooms, and we are ever grateful”

    The residents of Nueces County expressed their gratitude for the Marine Corps' efforts and their genuine interest in improving the quality of life in the community. The impact of this Nueces County IRT mission will undoubtedly be long-lasting, leaving a positive legacy for years to come.
