FORT CARSON, Colo. – Passing the unit’s guidon from one person to another closely resembles passing a baton or torch among teammates. The Soldiers, Families and distinguished guests of 4th Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) gathered together in Thorne Plaza for front-row seats to witness outgoing commander Lt. Col. Paul Haynsworth pass the torch of change to incoming commander Lt. Col. Williams Krebs, July 27, 2023.
Col. Justin D. Hufnagel, commander of 10th SFG (A), served as the reviewing officer for the 4th Battalion change of command ceremony, where he not only addressed the audience, but delivered words to both Haynsworth and Krebs.
“Paul, thanks for your leadership, your steady hand and thoughtful approach for both periods of crisis and transition in this battalion,” said Hufnagel. “Your experience and judgment have made all the difference.”
Hufnagel continued on to express how well Haynsworth has handled new challenges the battalion has faced, along with his effective responses to the emergent needs of his Soldiers.
Once he finished his portion of the speech directed towards Haynsworth, Hufnagel also made a point to welcome back Krebs and his Family to the Originals’ team.
“Will, we are thrilled to have you and your Family back among the Originals,” said Hufnagel. “You are absolutely the right man for the job and I know you will uphold the tradition of strong and effective leadership in 4th Battalion.”
Krebs’ military history speaks towards his familiarity of 10th Group. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005 and commissioned as an Infantry Officer, Krebs attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection, followed by the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course at Fort Moore (formerly known as Fort Benning), Georgia, and the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. Krebs began his Army Special Operations career in Germany with 1st Battalion, 10th SFG(A) as a Detachment Commander for Alpha Company and Charlie Company.
“I am pretty confident, especially after having met a lot of you and starting to understand this organization,” said Krebs while looking at the formation. “We are going to continue building a great team, we will prioritize people and relationships, while solving problems and I am looking forward to it.”
