PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AIR RESERVE STATION, Pa -- Lt. Col. Michael R. Conte, 911th Maintenance Squadron incoming commander, takes command during an assumption of command ceremony at Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station, Pennsylvania, Aug. 6, 2023.
Lt. Col. Shelly Martin, 911th Maintenance Group commander, presided over the ceremony and the event was attended by members of the 911th MXS, and representatives from across the base.
“We are blessed to have Lt. Col. Conte here at the 911th Airlift Wing,” said Martin. “With his long military career, he has what it takes to maintain readiness.”
Before becoming a commander, Conte served as the maintenance operations officer, at the 911th MXG and was responsible for the recruitment, retention, training and combat readiness of over 341 Air Force Reserve officers and enlisted personnel who support C-17 Globemaster III maintenance.
“I am honored to be selected for this position in servicing our Steel Airmen,” said Conte. “My focus is on safety, executing, managing, improving, and leading.”
Throughout military history, soldiers on the field often could not identify their own commanders. Recognizing this problem, the Continental Army of the United States conducted the official assumption of command ceremony. The formal assumption of command allows service members to witness the transfer of command between two officers and see their new commander first hand.
