WARREN, Mich.--- U.S. Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center employees caught a glimpse of what the future workforce might look like in a culminating event held last month for college students participating in GVSC’s Summer Hire Program (SHP).

The Summer Hire Expo is an opportunity for GVSC’s interns to showcase the work they’ve done within several fields of ground vehicle engineering and science. GVSC associates attend the expo to network with the summer hires and provide advice on navigating a career in the development of ground vehicles.

Poster boards and model examples are displayed across two floors of the design studio, where employees walk from booth to booth listening to presentations from the summer hires in 5-10 minute periods. Interns spend weeks becoming subject-matter-experts in their respective fields, honing their presentation skills, and preparing themselves to meet the high demands of the ground vehicles industry post-graduation.

“It was a lot of information,” said Vincent Deon, one of GVSC’s summer hires from Western Michigan University, who worked with another student on recycling gray water for utilities that require the use of non-potable water. “Thankfully, I had some great mentors who stuck with us when we had questions and made sure we weren’t lost at any step of the process.”

Aligning summer hires to a team, rather than an individual, allows for a wealth of knowledge in science and technology that they can draw on at any point during the program. It also enables more working relationships with the GVSC workforce that summer hires can come back to year after year as students.

The SHP also offers a direct pipeline to government work post-graduation. Several students transition from university to full-time roles within GVSC as a result of relationships formed within the organization during their time in the program.

Austin Monroe is a senior at Wayne State University and a 4-year veteran of the SHP. He’s preparing for a future at GVSC, actively seeking out opportunities to fit in within the organization.

“With my connections made over the last four years and putting myself out there, I’ve been able to create and maintain a lot of connections here at GVSC,” said Monroe. “My goal is to reach out to as many of those connections as possible and find a spot on a team where I can work on something I’m passionate about.”

With the SHP being a product of GVSC’s Human Capital department, SHP students are on the hiring manager’s priority list when an opportunity opens within the organization. It’s an important tool within GVSC that helps drive recruiting and retention for career engineers and scientists.

The SHP is one of several ways in which GVSC remains committed to the promotion of STEM outreach within the ground vehicles industry, the local community, and beyond. Direct hires from the SHP are one of many methods GVSC employs to ensure that top engineering talent stays in Michigan, and that the nation’s competitive edge in the STEM field remains at the top of its class.
