GOLDWATER AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, AZ - In the heart of the Arizona Air National Guard's 161st Air Refueling Wing, Staff Sergeant Zachary Baca stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of service that runs through generations. As a dedicated member of the Security Forces, Baca's journey has been deeply intertwined with his family's military tradition, marked by unwavering commitment and a people-first approach.
Baca, a graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology, has been a pivotal asset in the 161st Security Forces Squadron for nearly a decade. "This is kind of a family business for me," he shares. "I'm actually the third generation out here, following in the footsteps of my grandfather and my father."
His path to the Air National Guard began with aspirations of pursuing federal law enforcement, drawn by the parallels between his academic background and the skills demanded by his chosen career. However, the pull of the Guard's camaraderie and purpose proved irresistible, and Baca found himself investing eight years of full-time service before transitioning to Active Guard Reserve status.
"I've learned more from leaders with different styles," Baca reflects, highlighting the importance of his journey's lessons. "It's a people-first approach, and that's what my good leaders have taught me. Taking care of your people is essential, as happy and content individuals are the foundation of mission success."
Amidst his multifaceted responsibilities, Baca's role has extended from flight operations.. His administrative and logistical strengths shine, ensuring seamless operations and a robust security apparatus.
Notably, Baca's dedication extended to a deployment to an undisclosed location, where he played a crucial part in relocating the armory - housing ammunition, weapons, and high-value equipment. His administrative prowess earned him the prestigious Air Force Achievement Medal.
"Personally, some of the guys that I work with on flight have become some of my best friends," Baca shares, underscoring the camaraderie that propels his commitment. The tight-knit bonds formed during day-to-day operations reflect the Air National Guard's unique sense of unity and purpose.
Baca's journey exemplifies the values of the Air National Guard - a commitment to excellence, collaboration, and the welfare of its members. As he continues to chart his course, aiming for a full 20-year career, Baca stands as a testament to the Air National Guard's legacy and the enduring spirit that drives its mission to protect and serve.
