GRAFENWOHR, Germany – The 18th Military Police Brigade hosted Riot Control Formations Training to educate the 173rd Airborne Brigade in administering proper non-lethal techniques and formations in Grafenwoehr, Germany Aug. 1 to 3, 2023.

The purpose of this exercise is to teach and prepare other units about controlling, deescalating, and dispersing riots effectively and efficiently using non-lethal techniques and formations.

In riot situations, military police may not be enough, and Soldiers from different units with riot training will support in diffusing unrest and minimizing damages.

“What we are doing out here today is basically the same thing we would do with our Soldiers in riot training," said Staff Sgt. Jazsmine Evans, a military police noncommissioned officer assigned to 615th Military Police Company. “They have shields, knee guards, face shields, we are also showing them the equipment and some formations.”

The 18th Military Police Brigade demonstrated different formations because each serve different functions, such as protecting civilians and separating rioters, and how to properly use protective gear.

The techniques and formations are non-lethal and effective in setting the tone to direct and control rioters to gain control of the situation. Once the Soldiers gain control over the crowd, they gain an advantage to deescalate the situation and prevent any further damages and injuries.

“They use those different formations to push crowds in the direction they want them to go, to get a better advantage of the situation,” said Evans.

Military police protect people’s lives and property by enforcing military laws and regulations. They chose to be military police to ensure all personnel within military installations are in a safe environment and deter criminal activities.

“My dad is a 31E, Corrections/Detentions Specialist. I had an inspiration from my father to be military police,” said Evans. “There are Soldiers that chose to do this job and they chose to protect you.”

Military police face adversity because of the misconception that military police only issue speeding tickets; however, military police serve the community, people and U.S. Army by following military laws and regulations.

“That’s our way of helping the community,” said Evans.

After the event, the 173rd Airborne Brigade is more ready and capable to respond to riots and increase interoperability with military police units.
