MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- The Marine Corps Association Professional Leaders Conference hosted the annual Suicide Awareness and Prevention for Leaders at The Clubs at Quantico, July 25, 2023.
The event focused on teaching young leaders what suicide prevention is, and how to help spread the word to the junior Marines. Several guest speakers used multiple instruction methods to help everyone understand different forms of suicide prevention.
“We’re trying to reach the mid-grade leaders such as corporals, sergeants, and junior officers to help them better understand suicide prevention and how trauma plays a role in that, “said Dr. Jessica Strickland, a clinical psychologist with the Naval Health Clinic Quantico, “We are all different humans who have different human experiences “not one cookie cutter, death by PowerPoint training is really going to help stop suicide.”
According to the: voiceofsandiego.com, Marines are twice as likely to take their own life as their civilian counterparts prompting many, like the Marine Corps Association, working to save the those who are struggling.
“There are practical, simple things you can do that will make a difference for people that are struggling,” said Dr. David Rudd, Director for Veteran/ Military Suicide Prevention (where? Lots of orgs with same title). “Small things make a big difference when people are experiencing emotional pain.”
“It’s always a good thing when somebody wants to talk,” said Rudd. “The idea that talking can make it worse, is simply a myth.”
“We hope this event will give individuals tools that they need for themselves,” said Marta Sullivan, Director of Outreach and Engagement Integration at the Marine Corps Association. “But the main goal is to give leaders tools for themselves to apply to their Marines.”
“I think we need to continue to talk about suicide awareness and prevention,” said Sullivan.” It’s easy to move on to other topics but it’s a problem that is plaguing all Americans, not just service members.” For more information visit https://www.militaryonesource.mil/resources/milife-guides/suicide-prevention/
