    Marine Corps Base Quantico

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. –Marine Corps Base Quantico School Liaison Officers hosted an annual Military Family Life Councilors brief on September 8, to discuss the resources available to military families and educators around the base. The brief’s speakers represented various programs intended to provide support in way of medical care, educational resources, and raising awareness on various issues. Kimberly Simpson and Penny Rowley, MCBQ School Liaison Officers, organized a lunch with MCBQ commander, U.S. Marine Corps Col. Michael Brooks, following the brief, to discuss relevant topics.
Simpson explained the importance of making sure Military Family Life Counselors are aware of the resources the base has to offer. “It’s important for them because most of our families don’t live on the installation, which means that they don’t always have the connection to the resources. So, they are a bridge, through us, to the installation resources,” she said.
Other speakers included representatives from Military One Source, Family Advocacy Program, and the Naval Health Clinic Quantico. Though many of these resources are targeted towards military parents and their children, there are several that apply to a larger group, including the Naval Health Clinic’s Case Management, who bridge the gap between the civilian and military medical care, and Military One Source, who can offer support for the various challenges service members face.
Mallory McKnight, substance abuse prevention specialist, Prince William County Schools, spoke to attendees on the importance of healthy and drug-free living for children, and on the steps educators and parents can take to keep their children safe.
McKnight appreciates the relationship between the base and the surrounding educational community. “The relationship between us is extremely important because the more people that we have around the table, the better that we’re able to support our military children, our military families,” she explained.
