去った日曜日、9月24日、在沖米軍エイサー隊が近隣地域、北谷町青年連合会所属の栄口区青年会と共に、道ジュネ―をキャンプ・フォスター内の住宅地で行いました。午後6時からの開催はフォスター基地で基地住民対象、しかし、その後、グループは午後7時にキャンプ・レスターへ移動し、同基地内の駐車場で、基地住民のみならず地域住民にも、ゲートを開放しエイサーの演舞を披露しました。
海兵隊員、水兵隊員、米宇宙軍、そして嘉手納基地アメリア・イアハート中学校の太鼓クラブの生徒で構成される在沖米軍エイサー隊は、フォスター＆レスター基地司令官であるデビッド・Ｍ・バニング大佐の呼びかけで今年3月に始まり、5月の初お披露目(注１)以来、数か月の休みをいれ、また7月に練習を再開。この日と来る日曜日のイベントへ向けて地元青年会のサポートを受けながら週一回の練習に汗を流しました。
エイサーは沖縄の伝統行事で旧盆に先祖供養のために行われます。エイサーの型は地域によって変わりますが、大太鼓や締太鼓、パーランクー、手踊り、女踊りなどが特徴です。通常、道ジュネ―では地域の若者たちが住宅街をエイサーを踊りながら練り歩きます。
北谷町にはかつて10ほどの青年会エイサーが存在したようですが、今では、去年に基地内を練り歩いた謝苅区青年会(注２)と今年の栄口区青年会のみとなっているようです。しかし、消えゆく伝統を嘆く人々が地元のエイサーを復活させようと、いくつかの地区で近年、子供エイサーが立ち上がっています。
当日は、あいにくの天気で、雨に弱い太鼓や、音響機材を守りながらの準備となりました。しかし、いったんエイサーが始まると、心配した雨もぴたりとやみ、エイサーは滞りなく遂行されました。キャンプ・フォスターの道ジュネ―では、実際の旧盆に見られる光景が米軍関係者家族にも見られ、多くの観客がエイサー隊の後をついて歩きました。キャンプ・レスターでも、多くの日本人ギャラリーが今か今かと待ち構え、ある人は6時から待機している、お腹が空いたとつぶやいていました。
レスターでは午後8時からの開演で、在沖米軍エイサー隊が5曲演舞し、栄口区青年会が続いて10曲を披露しました。栄口区青年会は、北谷町青年連合会所属の沖縄民謡歌手よなは徹さんが地謡（じかた）として参加し、今回初の試みとなる横笛での前奏も入り少し違ったエイサーとなりました。
在沖米軍エイサー隊と北谷町青年連合会エイサーチームは、また今週末のイベントでもエイサーを披露するそうです。

The U.S. Forces in Okinawa Eisa Team, together with the Eguchi Young Adult Association of Chatan Town Young Adult Federation, held an eisa march performance I on Camps Foster and Lester, Sept. 24, 2023.
The group, consisting of Marines, Sailors, Guardians, and students from taiko clubs at Amelia Earhart Intermediate School, began in March of this year at the call of Col. David M. Banning, camp commander of Camps Foster & Lester. After a couples months off since their first performance in May(*), the group began practicing again in July. With the support of the local youth association, they have been practicing once a week in preparation for this day and the coming Sunday's event.
Eisa is a traditional Okinawan event held during the obon festival in lunar calendar to honor ancestors. The form of the eisa varies from region to region, featuring large drums, shimedaiko, perlanku, hand dances, and onna odori (female dancers). Usually, youth from the community parade through the streets of residential areas in michijune (Eisa parade).
There used to be about 10 young adult associations in Chatan Town, but now there are only two, the Jaagaru Young Adult Association, which paraded through the base last year(**), and the Eguchi Young Adult Association this year. However, people have been trying to revive eisa, and in recent years, children's eisa groups have formed in several districts.
Due to poor weather, the group had to prepare while protecting the rain-sensitive drums and sound equipment. However, once the eisa performance began, the rain stopped. At the Camp Foster michijune, a scene similar to that of the actual obon festival was seen by U.S. military families, with many spectators following as they walked along.
The show at Camp Lester started at 8 p.m., and after the U.S. Forces in Okinawa Eisa Team performed five songs, the Eguchi Young Adult Association showcased 10 songs. The Eguchi was joined by Toru Yonaha, an Okinawan folk singer as a singer and sanshin player from the Chatan Town Young Adult Federation, performed a little differently this time with a prelude played on a transverse flute as their first attempt.
The eisa teams from the U.S. Forces in Okinawa and the Chatan Town Young Adult Federation will also perform eisa at this weekend's event.
