FORT CARSON, Colo. – The Fort Carson Transition Assistance Program (TAP), U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Hiring our Heroes hosted the annual Fort Carson career summit Aug. 30-31, 2023, to help Soldiers and their Families successfully transition from active service to the civilian sector.
The event featured a networking reception, job seeker workshop and a hiring fair with 105 employers with over 67,000 positions to fill at the career summit, according to Sherry Jenkins, Fort Carson’s transitions services manager.
“Service members bring an awful lot to the table, so this is a win-win,” said Jenkins. “It's not just for the service members, but we're helping the employers as well, bringing in opportunities in every industry that you can think of.”
The summit helped connect hundreds in the military community with local, national and remote employment and training opportunities.
Spc. Isse Abdullah, who is stationed at Peterson Space Force Base, attended the networking event and the hiring fair.
“Networking is big. The more people you know, the more opportunities there are going to be,” said Abdullah.
After attending the networking event, Abdullah received five job offers.
“If you're a go-getter and you're putting yourself out there, you're not putting yourself in a box, there's a lot of opportunity out there. So that's why it's good to have these types of events,” he said.
Abdullah’s current enlistment ends in 2025, but he took it upon himself to start thinking about what his time outside of service would look like.
Since joining the Army, Abdullah has obtained five certificates and his bachelor’s degree in information technology.
Soldiers can begin taking advantage of TAP services 18 months prior to separation or 24 months prior to retirement.
“The goal is then to help them find meaningful employment after service with livable wages,” said Jenkins.
The TAP office is now located in building 1218, room 135, on the southeast corner of Ellis Street and Wetzel Avenue.
