Laughlin AFB hosted a luncheon to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 29, 2023.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the U.S.

“This month is a time to honor the vibrant and diverse communities that have shaped and continue to enrich the United States,” said Eddie Amezcua, Del Rio local business owner. “It is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of Hispanic Latino Americans in all aspects of society, from the arts and culture to science, business, politics, and beyond.”

During the luncheon, attendees had the opportunity to listen to various guest speakers, including Chief Master Sgt. Lester Largaespada, 47th Flying Training Wing command chief.

“We come from all parts of the world with different backgrounds, and we embrace our different heritages,” said Largaespada. “This is what makes us the greatest country in the world; not only that, but this is what makes us the greatest Air Force in the world.”

Amezcua explained how each individual carries a story that is uniquely shaped by their heritage.

“Our ancestors' struggles and triumphs, their dreams and aspirations, echo through the generations,” said Amezcua. “They leave an indelible mark on who we are today; the experiences that bind us together as ‘familia’.”

Aspects of Hispanic culture were introduced to the group, such as Hispanic food and musical performances by the Del Rio High School Varsity Mariachi Band.

As National Hispanic Heritage Month continues, it’s important to recognize the accomplishments of the Hispanic community and share them with others.

“National Hispanic Heritage Month is an important reminder of how much strength we draw as a Nation of immigrants,” said Staff Sgt. Oscar Cantu, 47th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controller and speaker of the event. “This month, we carry on the important work of honoring Hispanic heritage and give thanks to the many generations of Hispanic leaders who have helped build this country and continue to fight for equality and justice.”
