FORT CAVAZOS, Texas. -- Medics across the First Team competed for the Best Medic Competition title, Oct. 2-5. The Competitors faced a demanding, continuous, and realistic operational environment in which their skill sets were being challenged.
It was a close call but Sgt. Connor Lauster, assigned to 15th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division was able to emerge as the first-place winner. In total, four competitors rose to the challenge and they put in the strenuous effort needed during the 4-day long test.
“It was a really tough competition the whole thing was mentally and physically taxing,” Lauster said. “We didn’t really know how it was going to turn out and it came down to the last event and I was fortunate enough to win.”
The medics had to complete events such as the Army Combat Fitness Test, simulated combat casualty care lanes, advanced medical skills lanes, obstacle course, urban orienteering land navigation along with a ruck march , warriors skills test, combat water skills test and an M4-M17 stress shoot.
The events were made to simulate realistic combat scenarios for medics, which heightened the level of how impactful and effective the medics competed. The purpose of the Best Medic Competition is to identify a duo of outstanding medics to send to the Army's Best Medic Competition.
The Army Best Medic Competition will be held next year in January at Fort Liberty, NC. where the winners of this competition will continue to be tested physically and intellectually.
“I think it’s always important to challenge yourself both physically and mentally.” Capt. Zachary Bice, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division physicians assistant said. “For me personally on top of winning I just hope that I can motivate others to compete as well.”
The competitors had to take time to train and prepare for all the different events held at this competition.
The competition's goal was to identify the best medics in the division that will compete as a duo for the next tier of Best Medic Competition, but it also provided a valuable training opportunity for every medic that participated. As the winners of this level, Sgt. Quintero and Sgt. Lauster will compete in the Army-wide Best Medic Competition at Fort Liberty in the coming months.
