Keep it Simple and Stay Safe – Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Story By Susanne Greene • NNSY Public Affairs Specialist

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) website, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in 2022 received over 800,000 cybersecurity complaints with financial losses totaling more than $10.3 billion. The top three incidences were phishing, personal data breach and non-payment/non-delivery. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and, with a few simple steps, you can help protect Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), your identity and personal finances from cybercrime.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make professionally and personally is to become complacent when protecting ourselves from cybercriminals.

When you’re at work, take the following steps to protect NNSY from Threat Actors:
    1. Make sure your anti-virus software is current.
    2. Only use your government computer for official business.
    3. Make sure your passwords are strong. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
    4. Make sure emails and attachments are from trusted sources.
    5. Do not open an email from an unknown sender and look for mistakes or a missing subject line. The email could be a phishing attempt.
    6. Never walk away from your computer without removing your Common Access Card (CAC) and taking it with you.

Taking precautions while at home and traveling is also key to protecting your identity and finances from cybercriminals.

    1. Make sure your phone and laptop have the latest software updates and anti-virus protection.
    2. Do not click on links in emails, text messages or social media posts unless you are 100 percent sure it is from a trusted source.
    3. Use multi-layered security on your personal devices. Passwords, fingerprint or face identity are just a few of the security options available.
    4. Make sure your passwords are strong. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
    5. Look into purchasing identity theft protection or see if your financial institution or tax preparation software offers the service.
    6. Never leave your phone or laptop unattended while traveling or out in public. Also, pay attention to who is around you while using your device in public. The person sitting behind you might be looking over your shoulder and copying your personal and/or credit card information.

Taking a few simple steps at work can protect NNSY and the U.S. Navy from adversaries and being cyber safe at home will help secure your identity and personal finances.
