JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash.— U.S. Soldiers, assigned to 557th Engineer Construction Company, 864th Engineering Battalion, 555th Engineering Brigade, are entering the end phases of constructing three dedicated Tactical Casualty Combat Care (TCCC) sites for future medical training on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Oct. 18, 2023.
“This improves JBLM by giving the base a resource they didn't used to have, which is a TCCC training complex,” explains Capt. Michael Killian, Company Commander of 557th Engineer Construction Company.
The ongoing project, assigned to 557th by I Corps, will enhance the readiness and effectiveness of medical personnel, eliminating the need for off-site training and reinforcing the critical role that the base plays in preparing troops.
Site one is made to simulate a village with four bunkers; site two is a triangular trench with three bunkers and a command center bunker; and site three is two wide trenches with four bunkers overall.
The planning process, spanning several months, included the use of survey and design teams, equipment planning, and the creation of a timeline to ensure the project's successful completion.
Beginning in June, the project first involved area clearance of trees, followed by the use of heavy equipment like bulldozers, hydraulic excavators, scrapers, graders, and dump trucks in order to dig a trench complex for each site.
“Behind everything is a Soldier,” explains Killian. “The heavy equipment operators are Horizontal Construction Engineers (12N) and were complemented with the Vertical Construction Engineers, including carpenters and masons (12W), electricians (12R), and plumbers (12K).”
The project has served the dual purpose of not only having a valuable training area for future units to utilize, but also allowing the 557th Engineer Construction Company to further refine their constructing capabilities in the process.
“This helps I Corps while also helping our company accomplish our mission,” states Killian. “It’s mutually beneficial for everyone.”
