VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The waters of Chesapeake Bay served as the backdrop for an innovative U.S. Navy exercise testing new techniques for casualty transport across a range of scenarios. Led by Assault Craft Unit FOUR (ACU-4) and Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic (CHSCWL), the exercise simulated a coordinated casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) of injured personnel.
Designed to test and refine the rapid transport of injured personnel using an aircraft in conjunction with a Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC), the mission's primary goal was to swiftly relocate these individuals to a predetermined safe-haven during emergent situations.
“Innovating and experimenting new proofs of concept are critical to remaining the most capable and most flexible at any mission set we’re called to perform,” said Captain Javier Medina, Commanding Officer of Assault Craft Unit FOUR, “ It’s also key to refining our tactics and ensuring seamless integration between air assets and craft crews no matter the mission.”
The exercise included a number of iterations of CASEVAC scenarios. LCAC’s served as the initial mode of evacuation transport for simulated patients that were then hoisted to hovering helicopters and then swiftly transported to designated medical staging points ashore.
By engaging in such simulations, the units involved aimed to bolster their capabilities and ensure that teams are always prepared to respond swiftly and efficiently in real-world scenarios.
Furthermore, the exercise provided invaluable hands-on experience for both helicopter and LCAC craft crews, enhancing their proficiency levels and expanding their operational expertise.
