IRVING, N.Y. – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District met with town, state, and federal officials on Oct. 23, 2023, to review structural concerns on the southern walkway of Cattaraugus Creek Harbor, located in the Town of Hanover.
Why It Matters:
The harbor is a summer tourist destination that serves as an entry point for recreational boaters and 11 charter fishing boats which generates approximately $90,000 every year for local businesses. Over the years, the harbor walkway has slowly deteriorated. The town is collaborating with USACE to explore future operations & maintenance options to ensure public safety.
Background:
• USACE built the harbor in 1983.
• Maintenance is cost-shared at 59% federal and 41% New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP).
• No dredging has occurred since construction, however funding was received in 2022 for maintenance dredging and is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2024.
Way Forward:
USACE is committed to ensure public safety by providing vital public engineering services. Meeting early to have these discussions between federal, local and state officials is critical to ensuring the right solutions are identified to ensure the safest product is delivered to the public.
Safety Note:
USACE Buffalo District is committed to safety and encourage everyone to adhere to public safety signs posted around all public sites, including Cattaraugus Creek Harbor.
