CORONADO, Calif. – Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 3 welcomed its newest leader during a change-of-command ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Calif., Oct. 20.
Cmdr. Warren Fogler relieved Cmdr. Andrew Serfass in front of friends, family members, and EODMU-3 personnel as part of an outdoor ceremony at the unit’s headquarters.
Serfass took command of EODMU-3 in January 2022. While serving as its commanding officer, he led a team of 168 personnel on a deployment to U.S. 5th Fleet where they conducted a wide range of
operations in support of the fleet and joint forces. He also oversaw the development of training innovations that focus on preparing the unit’s Sailors for future combat operations.
“This is by far the best assembled team under [EOD] Group one,” said Serfass. “I couldn’t have picked a better leader or person to turnover this command to. I am so incredibly grateful to be
standing here today.”
Serfass’ next assignment is at U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla.
Keynote speaker, Commodore, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group One (EODGRU-1), Capt. Wade Hilderbrand said Serfass contributed to the success of the EOD community with his leadership.
“We honor those who have gone before us by leaving a place better than we found it. Andy is turning over an outstanding team,” said Hilderbrand. “Thank you Andy, for your hard work and dedicated service. I wish you the best in the future.”
In his first address as EODMU-3’s commanding officer, Fogler said he looks forward to leading a unit with a legacy of high standards.
“Andy, you are a tough act to follow,” said Fogler. “Watching you with the team here has been inspiring. I know they’ll miss you both but I’ll do my best.”
As a component of EOD Group One, EODMU-3 provides EOD platoons to eliminate hazards from aviation, surface, ground, underwater and improvised ordnance.
