The first memorial service honoring a local historic Dongducheon (DDC) leader was held on Camp Casey, Oct. 21.
General Eo, Yu-so, a former General of the Joseon Dynasty, who served during the mid-1400’s was celebrated with traditional dances, speeches and reenactments at his gravesite and the Impact Zone on Camp Casey.
Col. Loyd Brown, U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan-Casey Commander, spoke during the memorial service highlighting Eo’s service and the city of Dongducheon.
“As a military officer, I’d like to take a moment to talk about honoring those who serve and respecting their legacy like the community is doing honoring General Eo,” said Brown. “It is very clear the impact [Gen. Eo] has left on the City of Dongducheon and our community as his gravesite is on Camp Hovey.”
Eo’s gravesite lies within Camp Hovey and is recognized as DDCs historic site 4. The site is preserved and annually commended by United States Yongsan-Casey, Republic of Korea’s Army and the City of Dongducheon. This year also honored the 70th Anniversary of the ROK/U.S. Alliance.
Attendees included Dongducheon Mayor Park, Hyung Deok, military service members and roughly 50 Korean citizens and government officials. Descendants of Gen. Eo were honored and thanked for their trust of Camp Casey and Hovey’s gravesite maintenance program.
“To the descendants of General Eo, we are honored to have his gravesite here on camp Casey,” said Col. Brown. “A reminder of partnership between our communities but also as a reminder to our Soldiers of the rich history of this area and South Korea.”
This was the first memorial event in honor of Gen. Eo cohosted by the City of Dongducheon and USAG Yongsan-Casey. The city also hosted the 14th annual Gen. Eo parade through the community off post.
