FORT DRUM, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2023) -- Command Sgt. Maj. Jeremiah J. Larson joined the U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Drum command team as the new senior enlisted adviser during an assumption of responsibility ceremony Oct. 25.

Larson previously served as the Field Artillery Squadron command sergeant major with 2nd Cavalry Regiment, at Rose Barracks, Germany. Before that, he worked in G3 Fires, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. He replaces Command Sgt. Maj. Shelly Jenkins, who retired from the Army last month.

Col. Matthew Myer, Fort Drum garrison commander, welcomed Larson to the team and he spoke about the importance of the Army’s Noncommissioned Officer Corps.

Myer said among the three things that define NCOs is their ability to rise to the occasion.

“A good NCO rarely asks for less to do, but most often they are aggressively finding the right information so they know what to do,” he said.

Second, Myer said NCOs take action.

“They don’t wait,” he said. “They have a sense that there is always something to be done to make the situation better.”

Lastly, Myer said NCOs are known for taking care of people.
“Good NCOs know that people and the mission go hand in hand,” he said. “You can’t do one without the other.”

Myer said he is confident that Larson has demonstrated all three of those traits in his 25-year career as an enlisted Soldier.

“He has the experience, the temperament, and the leadership ability to be an awesome senior enlisted leader and command sergeant major for the garrison,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with you and have a front row seat to see you rise to the occasion, take action, and take care of our people. You have an awesome opportunity to use your influence to do good for Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division (LI), and I am proud to do it with you.”

Since arriving at Fort Drum, Larson said he has met with senior leaders, directors, and members of the garrison workforce to develop a better understanding of installation operations and its unique partnerships with North Country agencies and organizations.

“In this short time, I have been truly, truly impressed with you and the team’s professionalism and expertise in providing the best support to the 10th Mountain Division (LI), various organizations, our local communities, and the Soldiers and families of Fort Drum,” Larson said. “It truly is an honor and a privilege to serve with you, and I look forward to working alongside you every day.”
