Key leaders from Alaskan NORAD Region, Alaskan Command, and Eleventh Air Force visited Canadian Armed Forces Joint Task Force North Headquarters in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, Oct. 10-12, 2023.
This most recent visit to JTFN follows a long history of reciprocal senior leader visits and staff talks to strengthen partnerships, grow connections, and deepen the shared understanding of Arctic security challenges.
As neighboring commands in the North American Arctic, the common challenges and opportunities of the operating environment quickly came to the forefront, enabling more comprehensive discussions between counterparts.
According to U.S. Army Col. Russ Vanderlugt, Alaskan Command director of Plans, Policy, and Programs, “The Arctic is an integral region for both Canada and the United States as an approach to North America, requiring defense across all domains. Americans and Canadians are increasingly recognizing the Arctic’s role in our shared North American homeland and the value of our unique partnership.”
During the visit leaders from both commands engaged in reciprocal briefings on organization, operations, and intelligence, as well as briefings and site visits with JTFN mission partners. JTFN also provided detail on the execution of Operation LENTUS 23-07, during which the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) provided support to the Northwest Territories government during the unprecedented 2023 wildfire season. This support included the casualty evacuation of 68 intensive care patients from Yellowknife to Vancouver and assisting in the coordination of other civilian and CAF evacuation flights. In total, 70% of Northwest Territories residents were evacuated from their homes because of the fires.
“The visit was a great opportunity to discuss interoperability in the Arctic to ensure both headquarters are ready to provide top cover for North America,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Brig. Gen. Dave Moar, Alaskan NORAD Region deputy commander.
Overall, the visit allowed the two commands to strengthen their partnership, build relationships, and achieve shared understanding of mission sets involving the unique challenges and opportunities of operating in the Arctic.
