FORT BLISS, Texas - The 1st Armored Division Artillery (DIVARTY) welcomed its new senior enlisted advisor during a change of responsibility ceremony at the 1st Armored Division Headquarters parade field, Oct 27.

Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew S. Richter took over the role as the command’s senior enlisted leader from Command Sgt. Maj. Steve G. Devot. The event marked the symbolic passing of the unit's responsibility, readiness, training, and unit management from one leader to another.

The ceremony was officiated by Col. Jayson B. Morgan, the 1AD DIVARTY commander.

During the ceremony, Morgan bid a fond farewell to Devot and his family thanking them for their dedication to the command.

"Command Sgt. Maj. Devot has met all his challenges head on, and he has not only met the expectations of a brigade command sergeant major, but he has exceeded all of those expectations," said Morgan.

During his farewell remarks, Devot, a Miami, Fla. native, spoke on his experiences during his tenure at 1AD DIVARTY, and he thanked all Soldiers and leaders who helped him during his nearly two years as the command’s senior enlisted advisor.

"Over 21 months ago, I assumed responsibility for the best Division Artillery in the U.S. Army,” said Devot. “It has been an absolutely incredible journey, marked by teamwork, dedication, and most importantly trust."

During his tenure, Devot led 1AD DIVARTY through various complex missions sets and Warfighter exercises. Additionally, Devot helped lead the command though a rotation to the National Training Center to ensure operational readiness and modernization efforts as the Army goes through a generational shift to prepare for the Army of 2030 and beyond.

The passing of the colors marks a transition from Devot to Richter which reaffirms the unit's resilience but also mirrors the guiding principles of every Soldier.

Morgan welcomed Richter and his family to the Fort Bliss, home to America’s Tank Division, and expressed confidence in Richter’s ability to help lead the command to the next level.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Richter, I look forward to working with you, again, and solving Soldier's problems. I have no doubt you'll pick up where Command Sgt. Maj. Devot left off," said Morgan. "The Iron Steel family welcomes you, Beth, and the kids with open arms, and we look forward to continuing our momentum. I think you will find it's truly Better at Bliss."

Richter, a native of Topeka, Kan., enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2001 as a Field Artillery Firefinder Radar Operator. He has served in numerous leadership positions throughout his military career.
His extensive experience includes deployments in support of Operation Desert Spring, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Notably, he recently served as the senior enlisted advisor of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

During his remarks, Richter expressed his excitement calling this position his dream job.

"To all Iron Soldiers and Iron Steel teammates, you can't spell family without FA,” he said. “I firmly believe that the team you're on is greater than the team you lead. Beth and I are honored to be your teammates and proud members of the Iron Soldier family."
