REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — The largest exercise in the Indo-Pacific theater this year in terms of logistics footprint and movement of equipment wrapped up in Australia this month with vital sustainment support from Army Materiel Command.

Talisman Sabre 23 took place July 21 to Aug. 3 with AMC providing the joint force, allies and partners with Army sustainment capabilities to support potential large-scale combat operations in a contested multi-domain environment.

“This effort demonstrated our ability to deploy large volumes of personnel and equipment into Australia and stage, integrate and move them forward into numerous exercise areas that stretched the width of the continent in a distance similar to that from New York to Los Angeles,” said AMC Commanding General Gen. Charles Hamilton.

The logistics effort supported an exercise that enhanced the interoperability of 13 participating nations and was accomplished with key support from several organizations across the AMC enterprise, including the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Army Sustainment Command and Installation Management Command.

“In a contested logistics environment, the sustainment enterprise needs to be adaptive and flexible to meet the operational needs across the Indo-Pacific,” said Maj. Gen. Jered Helwig, commander, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, lauding the successful execution of TS23.

From a sustainment perspective, TS23 tested the Army’s strategic readiness and ability to move Soldiers and materiel from the U.S. to the Pacific at scale, validating AMC’s mission to get troops and equipment to the fight — rapidly and efficiently — from its installations to the tactical edge in a realistic training scenario.

Key AMC objectives for TS23 also included the drawing of Army Prepositioned Stocks, or APS, and employing APS Afloat. During TS23, U.S. Army Pacific Command, in coordination with AMC, conducted theater entry operations; joint reception, staging, onward movement, and integration; joint logistics over the shore; and joint petroleum over the shore.

To facilitate these major sustainment functions, ASC’s Army Field Support Brigades and Army Field Support Battalions were heavily involved providing corps logistics support elements and division logistics support elements, showcasing synergy in terms of Life Cycle Management Command support and the synchronization of enterprise-level sustainment efforts.

The overall collaboration and integration with the Australian Defence Force during TS23, to include presence from Joint Munitions Command, Tank-Automotive and Armament Command, and Communications-Electronics Command, provided on-the-ground expertise and enhanced equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational efficiency at the tactical point of need.

In addition, SDDC’s 599th Transportation Brigade established a tactical command post in Darwin, Australia, to command and control strategic surface movement and port operations. This was the first time the brigade established an expeditionary command and control node in Australia to provide updates on strategic vessel movements and port operations which successfully simulated contingency reporting and information requirements to the 8th TSC, which established the first Combined Joint Theater Support Command structure in Australia.

Port operations at Darwin and Gladstone supported the delivery of more than 1,500 pieces of joint force cargo, including from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force. TS23 also provided USARPAC and AMC with the opportunity to establish an equipment set in Bandiana, Australia as a precursor to the longer-term establishment of an enduring Logistics Support Area in Queensland.

As such, the exercise helped AMC set the Indo-Pacific theater for large scale operations and enhanced supply chain resilience.

“The Soldiers, civilians and contractors that embody our entire sustainment enterprise showed their resilience, know-how and warfighting support skills in a joint and multinational demonstration of AMC’s capabilities,” said Hamilton, the Army’s senior sustainer. “I could not be more proud of our team.”
