FORT GILLEM, Ga – Students and staff of South Habersham Middle School, in Cornelia, Georgia, host a Veterans' Day Ceremony to honor those who served and teach children the importance of military service on November 9, 2023.

“Students need to be educated on patriotism, love of their country, service, sacrifice, and how to properly thank a veteran,” said Daphne Penick, South Habersham Middle School principal. “Seeing the men and women in person who have fought for their rights and freedoms is so powerful.”

The ceremony was held in the school’s gymnasium and included performances from their band, choir and theatrical groups as well as poems and essays written by the students over the course of the year. South Habersham spends 30 minutes every day working on something that challenges them, the staff call this time “education enrichment.” The students used this time to prepare all presentations and performances seen during the ceremony.

South Habersham invited veterans and their families from all over Georgia. One such veteran was Veterans of Foreign Wars District 2 commander, former Sgt. Jason Nichols of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. Nichols was invited to give a speech on the origins of Veteran’s Day and why celebrating and honoring those who served should be a priority in all schools and across the nation.

“Veterans Day is set aside to remember every man and every woman who has taken up arms to defend our country,” said Nichols. “We honor every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, and Marine who gave some of the best years of their lives to the service of the United States and stood ready to give their life for me and you.”

The ceremony ended with a shadow play performance depicting the life of a person growing up, joining the service, going to war and returning to encourage the younger generation to join and honor the service of those before them.

Once the ceremony was complete, the attendees were invited to a breakfast reception hosted by the school’s Future Farmers of America Organization to network.
