FARAH, Afghanistan — The children of the Farah City Orphanage received donated school supplies from their government officials today.
"For these children, school supplies are like blood for someone who is bleeding," said Nasrullah Amini, the orphanage director.
This is the third time that Farah Province Gov. Rahool Amin has visited with the children and staff at the orphanage and the first visit by the newly elected 2010 Provincial Council.
Amin asked the children civics questions about parliament and the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai. Malaka, a 14-year-old girl who has been attending day sessions at the orphanage for five years now, raised her right hand while covering her smile with her burka twisted in her left fingers. She quickly answered the governor's questions.
Malaka has met the governor before. "I would ask the governor to always come here to talk with us and learn more about our lives," she said. Malaka wants to become a dentist when she grows up.
The school supplies donated to the orphanage included pencils, pens and paper.
"Our kids, the orphans really deserve these gifts," said Provincial Council Director Mohammad Nazir Khedmat. "We hope to do more for the kids."
