HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Guy Demarco, a 1st Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal technician, has been honored with the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Range Officer of the Year Award for 2023.
The Range Officer of the Year Award, presented based on peer nominations, recognizes individuals for their outstanding performance and professional character.
“Every year the PRS team sends out a questionnaire to members asking for nominations for the best range officer they’ve had that year,” said Demarco,” and out of the 1,500 range officers I made the top three, then the number one”.
The PRS, a civilian rifle organization boasting over 6,000 registered competitors across the United States, relies heavily on volunteers to officiate local, regional, and national shooting competitions.
In 2023, the PRS organized approximately 40 competitions, spanning 28 states. Demarco actively participated in 13 tournaments across eight states, covering an expansive distance of more than 10,800 miles.
“What moves me is that I must’ve had an impact on people that flew in from different states that had only seen my face maybe one time,” said Demarco. “And it’s nice to know I made a good enough impression that they remembered my name and gave me a vote.”
Demarco’s dedication to volunteering extends beyond the thrill of competition, grounded in his passion for making a positive impact.
“I would say find something that you’re interested in and go make an impact volunteering that way,” said Demarco. “I’ll continue to travel to do this in my free time because I love it”.
Demarco’s actions draw attention to the benefits of volunteerism and the vast array of opportunities that exist to impact surrounding communities.
“Do the right thing and put yourself out there with a positive attitude,” said Demarco. “You may not think you’re making a big impact, but people notice and recognize your work.”
