FORT CAVAZOS, Texas – The Association of 3rd Armored Division (Spearhead) Veterans visited Fort Cavazos as part of their reunion, Nov. 17, 2023. Fort Cavazos took the veterans on a tour of the installation where they had a meeting with Deputy Commanding General of Maneuver, Brig. Gen. Thomas M. Feltey, visited the Warrior Skills Training Center, and ate lunch at the Ironhorse dining facility.
This was the Association of 3rd Armored Division Veterans’ third reunion and second visit to Fort Cavazos. The veterans reunited in Round Rock, Austin before being shuttled to Fort Cavazos.
As the veterans entered the gate, they were shuttled to III Armored Corps Headquarters and taken to a conference room where they were greeted by Brig. Gen. Feltey. The veterans were shown a video encompassing III Armored Corps most recent exercise, Remagen Ready 24-01. After the video, Gen. Feltey began a Q and A with the veterans to answer any of their questions.
Before departing for their next destination, Brig. Gen. Feltey posed for a photo with the veterans and escorted them back to the shuttle so they could continue the tour of the installation.
The veterans were then taken to the Warrior Skills Training Center, where they were split into three groups and shown different training simulators. There the veterans were able to engage with modern training aids and simulators, including a SimMan at the Medical Simulation Training Center and a M1A2 Abrams tank simulator.
“The fact that you gave us the simulation…I got to get back into the tank that I was in during Desert Storm,” Keeton said. “A lot has happened with Fort ‘Hood’ as I know it…It’s really neat to see the post grow the way it has,” he added.
For Keeton, this visit was an opportunity to see Fort Cavazos again after retiring in 1992. Keeton had been stationed at Fort Cavazos three times during his military career.
The veterans last stop was the Ironhorse Dining facility. They ate a late lunch before being loaded back into the shuttle and leaving Fort Cavazos.
“It was great, I loved it,” Edward Donahue said toward the end of the tour.
Many of the veterans expressed they had a good time, and were impressed with the Soldiers they were able to meet and interact with during their visit.
“I’m just deeply impressed and deeply proud of the Soldiers I see here today,” Charles McFetridge said. “I worry if I’d been able to cut it in today’s Army, things have progressed so much.”
