Kunsan Air Force Base, Republic of Korea -- Safeguarding Kunsan Air Base’s fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons start and end with the hard work of dedicated crew chiefs.
On Dec. 8, 18 Airmen from the 80th Fighter Generation Squadron stepped into this new position of responsibility as they were recognized and introduced as their squadron’s newest dedicated crew chiefs.
Among the selectees, Staff Sgt. Charles Clark, 80th FGS dedicated crew chief, was individually recognized for his high-level job proficiency and expertise by being named the DCC for the 8th Operations Group commander.
Clark’s commitment, dedication to the mission and job knowledge are the merits of his selection as a DCC by squadron leadership. A DCC takes ownership of the assigned airframe overseeing inspections, cleaning, service, performing scheduled maintenance and maintaining his assigned aircraft.
“It is kind of like owning a nice car,” said Clark. “You spend the time fixing it, washing and cleaning it and then drive it somewhere. It gives you a good feeling when you show up somewhere with it.”
As an integral part of the success of the F-16 mission, Clark’s role as a DCC allows Kunsan AB to deliver rapid and precise air capabilities to protect and defend the Indo-Pacific region.
The personal accountability shown in Clark’s work demonstrates a level of responsibility that can be seen by junior and senior ranking Airmen.
“Doing everything to ensure the jet is in good condition allows us to build a trusting relationship with the pilots,” said Clark. “They see the work we put in, and they trust us when they get into the plane.”
Clark doesn’t just look to gain the confidence of the pilots who fly the aircraft he is responsible for, but he also looks to grow trust with the Airmen who work directly and indirectly with him.
“I want to lead by example,” said Clark. “I want to show Airmen daily what goes into well-rounded scheduled maintenance to reduce the amount of error because I believe that is where it starts.”
