1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, participated in a rotation at the Korean Combat Training Center (KCTC) from January 8th through the14th, 2023. Lt. Col. Lloyd Wohlschlegel, Commander of 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, said “We had the opportunity to participate in the state-of-the-art combat training at KCTC and were impressed by the spirit and abilities of the Korean soldiers. I look forward to strengthening the bonds between our nations through future combined training events like this one.”
Upon arriving at KCTC, 1st Battalion, known as the “Red Warriors”, received engagement training systems to be used in the upcoming battles. These systems consist of lasers and sensors affixed to weapons and clothing that allow Soldiers to engage each other with all the weapons in the arsenal without firing physical projectiles at each other. Every Soldier participating in the training also wears a small GPS tracker that allows the exercise control cell (known as EXCON) to view every Soldier’s position, condition, and status in real time on a digital map of the training area. The system also provides a by-engagement live feed of every shot fired in the simulation, from small rifles to large artillery pieces. The feed consists of where the shot was fired from, who fired it, and if it hit any other Soldiers in the exercise. This system runs 24 hours a day for the duration of the training.
At first, the Red Warriors were assigned a sector of the battlespace and ordered to defend it from an impending attack by the opposing force units. After hiking up into the mountains of eastern Korea, the Red Warriors began digging fighting positions, checking their weapons, and preparing to engage the opposing force. The Red Warriors fought into the night, destroying several enemy units, and engaging in small firefights throughout the mountains. 3rd Platoon, B Company, led by 1st Lt. Wyatt Martens, fought a particularly desperate battle after being surrounded by opposing forces.
The Red Warriors were then ordered to attack the enemy forces remaining in the area. The Battalion scout platoon, led by 1st Lt. Jose Bracamonte, and C Company, commanded by Cpt. Vince Paikowski, hunted down, and destroyed several enemy positions as they fought toward the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA)’s objective, key intersections and hilltops located on the other side of the training area.
B Co, commanded by Cpt. Chris Wilson, and A Co, commanded by Cpt. Colin Larabee, began their attack toward the final objectives, breaching the initial line of enemy obstacles before the weather took a turn for the worse. Temperatures plummeted as a cold front moved in, bringing freezing rain and snow, making for extremely dangerous training conditions. The remainder of training was suspended. “The dedication shown in fulfilling the assigned mission in the mountainous regions and harsh cold weather of South Korea was awe-inspiring” said Col. YunHwan Lee, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, 7th Infantry Division (ROKA), “Notably, we were able to witness the outstanding enemy identification ability and striking capabilities of the U.S. military during night operations”.
1st Battalion, 12th Infantry is currently deployed to South Korea as part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
