JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – JBLM Child and Youth Services hosted a job fair on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Eagle's Pride Golf Course in Dupont, Washington for civilians interested in a career in childcare.
The event was part of the monthly job fairs CYS conducts that seeks to find those on and off post who have a passion for providing care for children.
Shantel Hernaiz, an administrative support assistant with Child and Youth Services at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, helped facilitate the interviews.
"Our mission is to have those who are reliable in their positions and have a passion for childcare; who are dedicated to providing care for children and military families," Hernaiz said.
Aside from caregivers, CYS is also looking for I.T. professionals, program managers, cooks, custodians, administrative assistants and supervisors.
Applicants, depending on conditions, could receive benefits including, but not limited to: paid leave, insurance coverage including medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term care insurance options for full-time and part-time employees, as well as tuition reimbursement.
"We provide care for children starting at six weeks to five years old in the Child Development Centers, and then in the school-age centers it goes from kindergarten all the way to the fifth grade," said Hernaiz.
In addition, there are youth centers for grades 6 through 12 that provide programs such as 21st-Century Leadership Skills; Academic Support, Mentoring and Intervention Services; Fitness, Nutrition, Health and Awareness; Life Skills, Citizenship, and Leadership; Recreation and Leisure; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math; Sports; The Arts; Workforce Preparation; and Youth Sponsorship. There are also youth sports and fitness programs for ages 3 to 18 that provide individual and team sports in addition to nutrition classes.
"I definitely encourage you to join CYS because not only is it an amazing job and provides amazing opportunities, but as a spouse, you can take your job with you when your spouse receives orders to move bases," said Hernaiz.
Miriam Vargas, a military spouse with a young daughter of her own, was among the job applicants at the fair.
"I have a daughter and I would like to learn more about childhood development and use that knowledge for her as well,” Vargas said. “My husband is in the military, so I just want to get involved as much as I can for my spouse. So, I can help out my daughter and my spouse at the same time, to be there for them."
The next monthly JBLM Child and Youth Services job fair will be hosted at the Eagle's Pride Golf Course at 1529 Mounts Rd. SW, DuPont, Washington 98327, on February 14, 2024.
