NAIROBI, Kenya — The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) Public Affairs Office successfully concluded a three-day public affairs engagement with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) at their headquarters in Nairobi, an integral part of SETAF-AF's Theater Security Cooperation efforts in Africa.
The collaborative event, which took place from Jan. 29-31, focused on enhancing military communication strategies and fortifying long-standing partnerships. Participants from SETAF-AF and the KDF shared insights on a range of public affairs topics, including the use of digital media in public outreach, and the complexities of crisis communications.
"The exchange was an incredible opportunity for bilateral learning and growth," said U.S. Army Maj. Joe Legros, SETAF-AF Public Affairs Planner. "These discussions have undoubtedly enriched our approach to military communications and set the stage for future collaboration."
The event served as a platform for both forces to align their public affairs practices with the broader strategic objectives of regional stability and security.
"Collaborating with our SETAF-AF counterparts has enabled our team to better support events like the upcoming exercise, Justified Accord," explained Capt. Francis Warware, KDF Public Affairs Planner.
Also in attendance for the exchange was Staff Sgt. Carter Acton, public affairs production sergeant with the American Forces Network (AFN), Europe. This collaboration between AFN and SETAF-AF helped to provide KDF participants with a wider perspective of DoD public affairs operations.
"Being able to exchange public affairs best practices with our African partners was an awesome experience," said Acton. "They are true professionals and I feel like I learned just as much from them as they did from me."
The importance of these military-to-military engagements cannot be overstated. They represent a key component of the whole-of-government approach to security cooperation, designed to reinforce partnerships and ensure a cohesive security strategy across the continent.
"Such engagements underscore our commitment to building partner capacity and enhancing the security cooperation goals of both our nations," said U.S. Air Force Maj. Scott Gregory, the Kenya-U.S. Liaison Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
As SETAF-AF continues to support U.S. Africa Command’s mission, the insights gained from this event will inform future public affairs initiatives, ensuring that the U.S. Army remains a key player in promoting security and stability in Africa.
"The success of this exchange is a testament to the strong relationship between the United States and Kenya and our shared commitment to a secure and prosperous Africa," concluded Maj. Said Omar Said, KDF Staff Officer II of Visual Production.
