The Soldiers, part of the engineer’s Special Response Teams, have installed multiple barrier systems from El Paso to Brownsville. The focus remains on low water crossings that historically support mass illegal migration into Texas. The barriers are a strong deterrent in preventing illegal border crossings.
At the epicenter, Shelby Park has been a veritable thoroughfare for human smuggling, drug trafficking and illegal immigrant crossing into the US. As recent as two weeks ago, more than 3,400 immigrants were waiting in lines to be processed by law enforcement. The situation became dangerous for the illegal migrants as well as the citizens of Eagle Pass.
The first line of defense to prevent illegal border crossings is triple-strand concertina wire. In many areas, the wire is in proximity of the Rio Grande River. Approximately 29 miles of the C-wire is reinforced with multiple rows of material and anchoring equipment. The wire is strategically installed in areas of high-traffic illegal crossings and serves as a warning to not cross into Texas through the river.
The barrier systems continue with large container boxes. The CONEX are 40’ long and provide a contiguous wall when lined up together. Razor and concertina wire are added to the CONEX barriers to prevent climbing and subterranean breaches.
Lastly, the engineers are installing anti-climb barrier. As with the CONEX barrier, both types of wire are used to prevent breaches of the obstacles. The Guard has installed approximately 5 miles of ACB. The fence-like barrier can be installed by a small group of personnel and in a timely manner, making it an effective option to quickly block illegal border crossings.
Texas National Guard and state law enforcement partners continue surging equipment, personnel and capabilities to Shelby Park in Eagle Pass to prevent, deter and interdict illegal border crossings.
