SOUTH BEND, Ind. (February 12, 2024) – The University of Notre Dame Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) hosted their 29th annual Naval Leadership Weekend (NDLW) seminar in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on campus to promote the development of both their own and visiting midshipmen.

“The Notre Dame Naval Leadership Weekend serves as an indispensable platform to prepare our future and current leaders for the demanding challenges they will face as naval leaders,” said Capt. Lance Thompson, Professor of Naval Science and Notre Dame NROTC unit’s commanding officer.

More than 240 midshipmen from 44 universities across the nation traveled to Notre Dame this year to listen to past and present Navy and Marine Corps leadership.

“Midshipmen were able to receive invaluable insights of over 200 years combined experience from past and present Navy and Marine Corps senior leaders,” said Thompson. “Our future leaders cannot only add these insights to their toolbox, but take it back to their units and share with others. We express profound gratitude for the magnitude this impact this will have on the future of naval leadership.”

NDLW is fully planned and operated by the Notre Dame midshipmen in a manner that replicates the operational planning activities that occur in the fleet. All logistics from lodging to speakers to meals to transportation are coordinated by the unit.

“The Navy has a playbook, and you are our future players for our team”, said Rear Adm. Michael Sciretta, Director Maritime Operations, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. “You need to learn as much as you can while you are in school from the mentors and leadership around you. Leadership is a challenge. We are counting on you.”

Sciretta emphasized the importance of learning and accountability for the midshipmen prior to them gravitating and entering the fleet.

“The gold standard of leadership for me is to hold yourself and your peers accountable daily, even when we do not want to have those tough conversations,” said Sciretta.

Throughout the weekend there were community breakout rooms where the midshipmen were broken into Surface Warfare, Aviation, Submarine, and Marine Corps groups. Notre Dame Staff, with the assistance of visiting active duty staff, spearheaded a brief outline of their community and their experiences while answering questions from the midshipmen.

The final event of the weekend was a keynote address and dinner for the visiting midshipmen, staff and guests. Lt. Gen. David Bellon, commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve and U.S. Marine Corps Forces South, served as the keynote speaker and addressed the midshipmen at the closing dinner in the Corbett Family Hall, Downes Club Ballroom, part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football stadium.

“We are blessed to be entrusted with the sons and daughters of the American people,” said Bellon. “You must be both selfless and proficient. Your future Marines and Sailors will be counting on you.”

After talking to the midshipmen about his career and thoughts on leadership, Bellon took additional questions from the future naval and Marine Corps leaders.

Throughout the event, midshipmen were encouraged to mingle with each other and the speakers, and have discussions about leadership and discussions about the theme and topics of the weekend.
