CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – In 1987, the 2d Marine Division Maintenance Management School was established to be a follow-on training opportunity for the Marine Corps’ first maintenance management chiefs. After 37 years of operational growth, technical advancement, and a multitude of experienced instructors, it has evolved into the II MEF Material Readiness Training Center (MRTC). The MRTC provides Marines within the ground supply and equipment maintenance specialty fields across Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, as well as the Eastern Seaboard, an opportunity to receive extensive training.
“Since 2007, the MRTC has been providing both new and experienced Marines the ability to sustain / improve their skills in their occupational field,” said Richard Taylor, the director of the II MEF MRTC.
The training staff includes three enlisted Marines and two civilian contractors, the latter of whom retired from the Marine Corps with over 20 years of experience within their respective logistics job fields. Since 2019, an annual average of 1,100 Marines have been trained by qualified instructors to enhance their skills in ground equipment maintenance, ground supply, and logistics.
“We don’t just teach the new enlisted guys,” said Taylor, a retired U.S. Marine. “We also host training for the new commanders so that they can understand what II MEF can offer in the way of support for their unit’s material readiness efforts. Most of our training is offered to anyone from the rank of Private to Captain.”
The MRTC staff teaches a materiel readiness curriculum using a training suite that simulates Global Combat Service Support-Marine Corps (GCSS-MC), which enables students to fundamentally apply the operational skills that would otherwise be unsustainable while in garrison. Maintenance specialists’ curriculum focuses on the capabilities of the individual conducting ground equipment maintenance on any of the different equipment types. Conversely, supply specialists’ training emphasizes ground supply procedures using a training suite to educate and sustain students using GCSS-MC, the primary system used by the Marine Corps to manage ground maintenance, supply, and logistics.
“This training isn’t necessarily exclusive to Camp Lejeune either,” Taylor said. “We take in Marines from the local reserves so that they can operate at the same level as the active-duty Marines who do this every day.”
The purpose of the II MEF MRTC is to provide and maintain ground equipment maintenance, ground supply, and logistical skills necessary for mission accomplishment. Prospective students can learn the curriculum at a manageable pace as each class is condensed to a maximum of three days, allowing more classes to fit within the fiscal year and provide the using units flexibility to enroll their Marines.
The II MEF Material Readiness Training Center plans to expedite curriculum development and implement advanced training methods for Marines. Just as when the school was established almost 40 years ago, the instructors remain dedicated to providing quality sustainment training in maintenance and supply, and host other logistics-focused events. After moving to a new facility, the MRTC can now provide an improved training experience. In addition, both students and staff members can now access a closed network training environment and live internet. The MRTC also plans to upgrade its training servers this year. The center, along with its qualified instructors, currently serves maintenance and supply specialists who want to enhance and sustain their vital skills and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.
