    III Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP MUJUK, Republic of Korea -- U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Lindsay Zamorano Peláez, a radio operator, 7th Communication Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, employs her skills in a new environment in preparation for Freedom Shield 24.

FS 24 is an annual joint, combined, and inter-agency exercise in the ROK that strengthens the combined command and control capabilities of U.S and ROK forces. This exercise provides the U.S and ROK Marines the opportunity to rehearse combined operations, exchange knowledge, and demonstrate the strength and capability of the U.S-ROK alliance.

For Marines like Zamorano Peláez, the change in scenery can provide opportunities to improve military occupational specialty proficiency, which will enhance the overall mission accomplishment of 7th COMM.

7th COMM mission is to establish, maintain, and defend communication networks and services in order to facilitate the commander’s ability to command and control forces in various environments.

“I’ve been able to experience the importance of being part of an exercise,” said Zamorano Peláez. “And for me being a radio operator, it’s given me more opportunities to work with, troubleshoot, and do all these things with radios where I didn’t get the chance to back in Okinawa.”

While training in the Republic of Korea, Zamorano Peláez has been getting more hands-on time with the AN/PRC 117G radio and conducting practical applications as a part of setting up communication systems for FS 24. With this being her first time in the ROK, she is able to employ her skills in a new location that poses new challenges to overcome.

“[FS 24] helps me prepare better to take over because it builds both the confidence I need in order to lead fellow radio operators and teach them simultaneously,” said Zamorano Peláez. “As well as helping me find my own teaching style and learning how to become a noncommissioned officer.”

As Zamorano Peláez builds upon her skills and knowledge as a radio operator, her leadership took notice in the eagerness and willingness of being a leader herself. As the exercise continues, Zamorano Peláez will continue to oversee the Marines on her team and further grow as a leader of Marines.

“I have been working with Lance Cpl. Zamorano Peláez since she entered the fleet,” explained Cpl. Justin Maya, a transmissions systems operator, with 7th COMM, III MIG, also Zamorano Peláez’s direct supervisor. “Observing her progress since she initially joined the unit, I am assured of her capability to take over my role upon promotion. She is an asset to 7th Communications Battalion, and I foresee her becoming a communicator of well renown within III MEF.”

Being assigned to 7th COMM, III MIG, has given Zamorano Peláez a unique opportunity to travel from Okinawa, Japan, to the ROK and apply her skills as a radio operator in austere environments across the Indo-Pacific region and build long lasting relationships between our allies.
