AUSTIN, Texas – In a convergence of military insight and civilian innovation, Gen. James E. Rainey, Commanding General of Army Futures Command (AFC), inaugurated the BattleBots Metal Mayhem competition at South by Southwest (SXSW) on the morning of March 10.
Sponsored by the U.S. Army, the event served to highlight the Army’s keen interest in cultivating innovation, including in the field of robotics and among next-generation engineers.
The competition, set against the backdrop of SXSW’s vibrant atmosphere, invited high school and college participants to design, build and pit their robotic creations against one another in a test of engineering prowess and strategic thinking.
More than just a spectacle of technological combat, the BattleBots enterprise seeks to nurture the inventive spirit of today's tech-savvy generation.
"Young men and women like you, who care about other people and are also interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), let me know the future of our country is bright,” Rainey said.
BattleBots Metal Mayhem drew crowds of robotics enthusiasts, engineers and military personnel to the Austin Convention Center, providing a unique platform for dialogue between the Army and the tech community. Participants and spectators alike were offered a glimpse into the potential applications of robotics and automation in military contexts, sparking discussions on future collaboration, advancements in robotics and the importance of fostering creativity and technological fluency among the next generation.
