CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – The U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Fire and Emergency Services demonstrated an inflatable air cushion to garrison leadership March 15 at a barracks on the installation. The air cushion’s inflation system enables rapid deployment in 80 seconds.
“Camp Humphreys is a vertical installation. There are buildings here that are two, three or more stories high and that’s the majority of them,” said Deputy Fire Chief Hungpyo Rucci. “Therefore, a rescue air cushion is essential in our operations along with our aerial vehicle – ladder truck. It helps reduce the risk of injury and provides a safer landing for both rescuers and those being rescued.”
To demonstrate a simulated emergency event, the fire fighters deployed the air bag and fire fighter Yi Sang-u jumped from the third floor of the barracks landing in the bag unharmed.
In the next demonstration, the fire fighters restored the bag in 30 seconds ready for the next use. Higher up in the barracks a training mannequin was used to demonstrate a fall, which landed safely on the cushion.
USAG Humphreys Fire and Emergency Services is the best medium sized fire department in Army Installation Management Command for 2023. The new air cushion will improve the department’s capabilities and increases safety in high-rise rescue operations.
