David Dentino, former Deputy Director of Air Force Civil Engineers, transitioned to a new role as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Installations Housing and Partnerships on March 25.

Dentino has been close to the Air Force his entire life, starting with his father, who served as a pilot. Dentino spent 18 months in his previous role as part of a career that spans more than 35 years as a civilian Air Force civil engineer.

When asked what advice he has received that has influenced him during his career, he said, “Do the job that you’ve been given, but be open to new opportunities. New opportunities aren’t going to come if you can’t do the job you’ve been given.”

As Deputy Director, Dentino served as the functional manager for 14,600 civilians and oversaw the development team and functional advisory council. “It’s been a lot of fun and very rewarding when you have small successes in a specific area”, said Dentino. These small successes come from the people who work hard to get initiatives off the ground. Dentino explained, “At the end of the day, I’m just really proud of our people, they’re phenomenal.”

Dentino said that he hopes the enterprise can continue to develop the leaders the Air Force needs and that investments continue to be made in the right things, like creating a positive infrastructure.

He shared his advice for anyone interested in a civilian career as an Air Force civil engineer. “Enjoy it and take the opportunities that come to you. For me, it’s been fun and it’s why I’ve stayed for 35 years – both the people and the job itself are fun.”
