    Sailor in The Spotlight

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - Operations Specialist 1st Class Charles Elzey, born and raised in Baltimore, Md., has been in the Navy since 2012 and currently serves as a reservist.

He is the leading petty officer for approximately 20 Sailors at Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron EIGHT (MSRON 8).

Elzey enjoys going underway, weapon handling, and learning new skills through training. Elzey chose to join MSRON 8 because of its reputation as a great unit. Although his responsibilities change day-to-day, Elzey said he most enjoys leading the Sailors in the unit.

“Once I get something accomplished, I feel like it’s better to share it with younger Sailors, and help push them up,” said Elzey.

Elzey recalled when he was assigned to a Naval Security Forces unit. He said he felt he was in the wrong field and that he did not receive proper guidance. After making the OS rate, he promised himself that he would guide younger Sailors the way that they needed to be guided.

“The best thing I can do is give back to them,” said Elzey.

Elzey’s current objective is to become a coxswain, a Sailor qualified to drive boats under 100 tons. He said he trains for it every day in hopes of achieving this objective.

“Elzey will always stop and help a Sailor before he finishes what he's doing,” said Cmdr. Andrew Smith. “He takes care of the Sailors and that's a huge deal for me. He's killing it.”
