Brothers by Blood Inspires to Brothers in Arms
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – Ashton Connor, a U.S. Marine Corps poolee native to Summerville, South Carolina, will ship from Recruiting Substation (RSS) Summerville in Summerville, South Carolina to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (MCRDPI), South Carolina, Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

Ashton is a 2022 graduate of Summerville High School. However, it wasn’t until almost a year later he was inspired by his brother, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Ethan Connor, a canvassing recruiter with RSS Summerville, Recruiting Station Columbia, 6th Marine Corps District to enlist into the Marine Corps, to pursue claiming the title of “United States Marine”.

“In the past year, I was doing part-time jobs but not really gaining anything that would help me in the real world,” Ashton said. “After I heard my brother was going to become a recruiter in the same office he was recruited out of, I talked to him and became motivated to fully commit to the Marine Corps. I gained the understanding that the Marine Corps will help me achieve greater things in life with the experiences and teachings they provide.”

“At first, my brother looked into the Marine Corps after high school but it didn’t interest him at the time,” said Ethan. “Not long ago, in March, we talked about what he wanted for the next step in his life. He got motivated to follow in my footsteps.”

To begin recruit training, all aspiring Marines first need to pass the Initial Strength Test (IST). Ashton was not always in the shape he needed to be to ship to MCRDPI. In under four weeks, Ashton came from running 1.5 miles in 26 minutes to 11 minutes and 15 seconds, conducting a single pull-up to now performing eight pull-ups, and holding a 45 second plank to now holding for almost three minutes.

“I worked out with Ashton constantly to get him to where he is now,” Ethan said. “He dropped 40 lbs in under a month to be where he is now. Ashton went from being the kid struggling the most at the poolee group workout sessions to leading the pack.”

“Losing this weight was a very motivational part of my journey,” said Ashton

After graduating as a Marine from MCRDPI, Ashton will be assigned to a 08XX Combat Support Military Occupational Specialty.
