COLUMBIA, S.C. – U.S. Marines from Recruiting Substation Columbia, Recruiting Station Columbia, 6th Marine Corps District will attend the Empowering Justice 5K at Richland Northeast High School, Columbia, South Carolina, 1:30 p.m., April 13, 2024.
The opening ceremony, 5K run, and Youth Fun Run events commemorate the life and legacy of U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt Justice Stewart, who tragically lost her life while on a run.
This event is not only a tribute to her bravery and dedication, but also a celebration of her unwavering commitment to service. In 2018, Stewart earned the title “Marine” while commissioning as an officer through the Frederick C. Branch Leadership Scholarship to attend college as a member of the NROTC program. The Frederick C. Branch Leadership Scholarship is named in honor of the first African-American Marine Corps Officer who was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on November 10,1945.
The footsteps of this run symbolize a heartbeat bringing life into the memories that 1st Lt. Stewart left behind to share with the world. Participants of all ages will have the opportunity to run, walk, or jog, creating a supportive atmosphere that embodies the values of honor, courage, and commitment central to the Marine Corps.
By honoring 1st LT Stewart, participants celebrate a giving heart, a selfless soul, an infectious laugh, and a heartwarming smile in a meaningful and empowering way. The Empowering Justice 5K Run invites participants from all walks of life to come together in unity and solidarity.
