The U.S. and Philippine Air Forces conducted bilateral flight scheduling training at Basa Air Base, Philippines, during Cope Thunder 24, Apr. 11, 2024.
During this training, U.S. Air Force Capt. Timothy John Nolan, Joint Live Fly Cell deputy officer in charge, shared best practices with twelve Philippines Air Force members.
"We gave an overview of the live-fly cell function during Cope Thunder and Balikatan," said Nolan. "The Live-Fly Cell's function is to ensure that the airspace does not become too saturated to minimize the risk of flight safety issues."
The training went over creating a consolidated schedule to provide everyone with maximum situational awareness of the airspace by forecasting the next 24 to 96 hours and all of the assets involved in their airspace.
"We explained our process of compiling all of the flight schedules from every flying squadron and other branches participating in an exercise into one product for everybody involved," said Nolan. "We're just an additional layer to ensure everybody's safety while operating in an airspace.
"This lecture has increased my knowledge of scheduling and my Philippine colleagues," said PAF Sgt. Ronnel Calalo, training apprentice. I'm looking forward to it and hope that this type of training continues for others who do not have experience with joint exercises. We know that continuing to conduct this type of bilateral training with the U.S. will have a big impact on us all."
Through joint exercise events and shared challenges, Cope Thunder enhances the U.S.'s collaboration ability by working shoulder-to-shoulder to protect Philippine interests and support local populations.
"The camaraderie that has been built between the two nations has a very big impact on both personnel's morale and welfare," said Calalo. “This bilateral training increases and teaches new knowledge from the U.S. Air Force. I hope other participants from the Philippines may experience this kind of training and exercises soon."
Bilateral training exercises like Cope Thunder 24 reinforce the U.S. commitment to peace and prosperity in the region.
"Both sides are working together to develop the best practices and procedures that will strengthen the alliance between both nations and work best for the future iterations of Cope Thunder and Balikaton," said Nolan.
