Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) has been faced with new challenges amidst the growing complexities of ship readiness operations. However, MARMC has been responsive and ready to tackle these challenges through equipment and building upgrades.

The initiative, which began October 2021 within Building CEP-200, was part of Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center’s (CNRMC) strategic phased replacement plan for Industrial Plant Equipment (IPE) at MARMC. CNRMC’s IPE team has been busy working to establish additive manufacturing capabilities worldwide, strategically identifying Regional Maintenance Centers (RMCs) to receive state-of-the-art multi-dimensional printers.

Mark Hansen, equipment manager at MARMC, highlighted several recent equipment upgrades, including the Lasertec 65 Directed Energy Deposition (DED) hybrid metal additive manufacturing machine saying, “The Lasertec 65 is an absolute game-changer in the way we maintain the Fleet. The machine allows for fast, precise, and cost-effective repairs by leveraging a hybrid of additive and subtractive technologies. The goal is to utilize the machine for additive repairs of expensive, long lead time or obsolete parts. It will truly be a paradigm shift in the way we do maintenance which will result in significant cost savings for the Navy.”

Industrial Plant Equipment Manager, Hezekiah Crandall, emphasized the empowering effect of modernized equipment on employees, stating, “When employees see investments being made in equipment and infrastructure, it can boost their confidence in the company's commitment to their work environment and productivity. Upgrades often lead to increased efficiency, smoother operations, and improved working conditions, which positively impact morale and foster a more positive and motivated workforce.”

The Navy Afloat Maintenance Training Strategy (NAMTS) Corrosion Control Lead and Industrial Plant Equipment Team, led by Mr. Scott Buchanan, recently spearheaded efforts to procure two 1000 Watt Adapt Laser Ablation Systems. These systems were then delivered to MARMC's Pump Shop and Southwest Regional Maintenance Center’s (SWRMC) Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (AC&R) Shop.

“This unique piece of equipment allows the Regional Maintenance Centers to effectively remove paint and corrosion from equipment surfaces without producing hazardous material to dispose of,” said Crandall. “This reduces operating costs, set-up, and clean-up times. It also significantly increases the shop's production rate and the quality of the outgoing equipment to ships.”

MARMC, a field activity under Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), provides surface ship maintenance, management and oversight of private sector maintenance and fleet technical assistance to ships in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
