LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – Service members undergoing permanent change of station may wonder what to do with unwanted items. Just like Goodwill or the Salvation Army, the Los Angeles ScholarShop, a thrift store located at Building 285 on base, provides an alternative option for donation, and the proceeds go toward supporting the Los Angeles Military Charity Fund.

The ScholarShop benefits dependents of service members and Department of Defense civilians. The LAMCF scholarship is awarded every spring with monetary funds ranging from $500 to $2,500. The institution of higher learning directly receives the funds, covering expenses associated with tuition, books, or housing.

“All proceeds from the ScholarShop go into our scholarship fund,” said the LAMCF President Nancy Hodgkiss.

Service members and civilians with base access can make donations 24/7. A donation bin is conveniently located outside building 285 for after-hour donations, between the fitness center and parking garage.

“We take all items as long as they’re serviceable and clean,” stated Hodgkiss. “We don’t accept weapons, food products, and similar items, but pretty much household goods and clothing are welcome.”

LA ScholarShop scholarships are open to dependents of all military branches and components, including active duty, National Guard, reservists, retired, missing in action, or deceased and DOD civilians.

When asked about the LAMCF’s eligibility criteria, Hodgkiss explained, “We understand that military children have a lot of burdens other kids don’t have, they may be moving around a lot or one of their parents deploying. We're looking at their academic record, extracurricular record, any special circumstances, death in the family, or having to work to help support the family. We're looking at all-around candidates.”

In addition to the funds generated from ScholarShop, the LAMCF also receives contributions from other aerospace-related companies and organizations across the region.

“I'd like to comment that our ScholarShop is run entirely by dedicated volunteers. So they are all here because we all believe in the transformative value of education,” added Hodgkiss. “Our scholarship program wouldn't be possible without the partnership of our community partners.”

The LA ScholarShop is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you want to know more about the scholarship, how to apply, where to donate, and volunteer opportunities visit their website at https://www.lamcf.weebly.com.
