The 194th Tank Battalion holds an annual wreath laying memorial ceremony for the Battle of Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines during World War Two at the Minnesota National Guard Armory in Brainerd Minnesota, on April 9th, 2024.
The Bataan Peninsula fell to the Japanese army on April 9th, 1942, after four months of fighting. Over 11,000 American and 60,000 Filipino Soldiers were taken as prisoners of war and forced to march 65 miles and only about 54,000 troops survived the march. Many of those who survived the march died in overcrowded prison camps with poor living and medical conditions.
American Soldiers from Army National Guard units across Minnesota, California, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin endured the Battan Death March and were put into Japanese Prisoner of War labor camps through the duration of World War 2.
