FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - The M2 machine gun, affectionately known as the .50-caliber machine gun, .50-cal or "ma deuce," stands as an iconic symbol of firepower and reliability.
This formidable weapon has played a crucial role in military operations since World War II and is known for its ability to deliver devastating firepower against enemy targets.
From its inception, the M2 machine gun has been a staple in the arsenal of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, providing unparalleled firepower and versatility on the battlefield. Through countless drills, qualifications and deployments, Soldiers with the 213th Regional Support Group have honed their skills with the M2, ensuring readiness to face any challenge that comes their way.
Operating the M2 machine gun comes with a few steps.
Assembling the M2 Machine Gun
- Prepare Your Workspace: Find a clean, well-lit area to work in. Lay out all the parts of the M2, including the receiver, barrel, bolt assembly and tripod if you're using one.
- Barrel Attachment: Align the barrel with the receiver and insert it firmly. Rotate until it locks securely into place.
- Bolt Assembly Installation: Slide the bolt assembly into the receiver, ensuring it fits snugly and moves freely.
- Mounting the Tripod: If your mission requires it, mount the M2 machine gun securely on a tripod.
Disassembling the M2 Machine Gun
- Clear the Weapon: Always start by ensuring the M2 machine gun is unloaded. Remove any ammunition belts and visually inspect the chamber to confirm it's empty.
- Removing the Bolt Assembly: Press the bolt latch and carefully remove the bolt assembly from the receiver.
- Detaching the Barrel: Rotate the barrel counterclockwise to unlock it, then lift it out carefully.
- Additional Disassembly: Depending on your maintenance needs, you might need to disassemble other parts. Refer to the manual for specifics.
Operating the M2 Machine Gun
- Load Ammunition: Place a loaded ammunition belt into the feed tray. Ensure it's properly seated for smooth feeding.
- Charge the Weapon: Pull the charging handle back fully and release it to chamber a round. Confirm the bolt is forward and locked.
- Aim and Fire: Align your sights, aim and squeeze the trigger. Maintain a steady rate of fire, monitoring for any issues.
- Cease Fire and Clear: After firing, release the trigger and clear the weapon. Ensure it's safe before proceeding.
- Unload and Secure: Remove the ammunition belt, clear the chamber and follow the protocol for unloading and securing the M2 machine gun.
Be mindful of attaching the barrel, jams can occur if not aligned and locked properly. It is ideal to have a battle buddy or two to help lift the weapon system. During usage of the M2, the system can get hot. Always use gloves when in contact.
