FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – Brig. Gen. John Pippy, director of the joint staff, Pennsylvania National Guard, was the featured speaker an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration here May 17.

Pippy, whose mother is from Thailand, spoke about his family background, military family, the Army and the Asian American and Pacific Islander personal views, and the next steps for the future of military culture.

“No matter where we are from, we are all the same, but we all bring our own story,” Pippy said.

Pippy wanted the crowd to take away one thing, which was the main theme of his speech. It is compared to how we use cameras. He challenged service members to open their aperture and see that everyone has a story to tell.

“Remember to open your aperture," Pippy said. "This means expanding how you see more, to know more, and to understand more. You also want to ask yourself; how do you view the world? How do you help others see a brighter future?”

Pippy's military career began in 1992 after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Prior to being appointed director of the joint staff, he served as the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's land component commander. He is also a Bronze Star Medal recipient, participated in multiple State Partnership Program missions with Lithuania, and joined the Pennsylvania Army Guard in 2004.

As director of the joint staff, Pippy said his goal is to oversee Soldiers and ensure that they are properly trained and equipped to complete their tasks.

Pippy said every person who serves has two options: They can either be a tree that takes all the sunlight or can make a shadow to share with others.

“The great thing about the military is they strip it away," he said. "They don’t care if you are rich or poor, male or female, or even what your ethnic background is. They only care if you get the job done.”
