George Washington Strike Group (GWSG) and ships from the Brazilian navy participated in a bilateral exercise May 17-19 off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

USS George Washington (CVN 73) with aircraft from embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter James (WMSL 754) cooperated in surface and air exercises with Brazilian frigates Independência (F44) and União (F45). Brazil navy staff members embarked George Washington in support of integration and exercise execution.

“Our navies were able to successfully complete a series of surface and air exercises over the last two days and I am extremely proud of our ability to integrate,” said Rear Adm. Alexis Walker, commander, Carrier Strike Group 10. “We will continue to operate with our partners in South America to increase our ability to work together across multiple domains.”

The Porter, Independência and União conducted ship maneuvering exercises, while CVW-7 and Brazilian aircraft conducted air power demonstrations and air defense exercises.

“Bilateral exercises like this allow us to practice tactics, procedures and techniques and gain even more experience in the maritime sphere through the exchange of mission-focused knowledge and expertise,” said Cmdr. Adam Yates, operations officer, George Washington. “This is also an opportunity to gain a better cultural understanding of Brazil, which makes us even stronger partners.”

George Washington’s embarked air wing consists of the "Argonauts" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 147, "Jolly Rogers" of VFA-103, "Patriots" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140, "Sun Kings" of Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 116, "Nightdippers" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, and "Grandmasters" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46.

George Washington is deployed with Porter and the Henry J. Kaiser-class replenishment oiler USNS John Lenthal (T-AO-189) as part of Southern Seas 2024 which seeks to enhance capability, improve interoperability, and strengthen maritime partnerships with countries throughout the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility through joint, multinational, and interagency exchanges and cooperation.
