    11th Airborne Division

SKILLINGARYD, Sweden – The Swedish Armed Forces 1st Division hosted the 11th Airborne Division staff as part of exercise Swift Response 24 from May 4-13, 2024.
Swift Response 24 is one of three sub exercises of DEFENDER 24, the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe with more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members representing more than 20 allied nations.
Swift Response provided an opportunity for the 11th Airborne Division to rapidly deploy to the U.S. Europe Command Area of Operation, establish a fully functional command post overseeing the 173rd Airborne Brigade joint forcible entry operations into Sweden and North Macedonia while also providing the opportunity to collaborate with the Swedish Armed Forces, NATO’s newest member.
“Mutual cooperation and collaboration will lead us to interoperability,” said Brig, Gen. Robert McBride, the deputy commanding general–operations for the 11th Airborne Division. “Once we are interoperable, we will achieve the readiness required to thrive together in the European area of operations.” During the exercise, the different staff sections from the division headquarters used the opportunity to share tactics, techniques and procedures while also training best practices with their Swedish counterparts. This is the first time a U.S. unit collaborated with the Swedish Armed Forces since they joined the NATO Alliance in March of 2024.
Reflecting on all the 11th Airborne Division has achieved in less than two years since its activation on June 6, 2022; Brig. Gen. McBride said, “DEFENDER 24 gives the division along with our NATO partners, the opportunity to build upon its INDOPACOM and JPMRC (Arctic) experiences to become a more dynamic formation by enhancing combat readiness, capable of responding to and thriving in any global contingency.”
