KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea – The Wolf Pack welcomed Col. Derrick R. Franck as he accepted command of the 8th Operations Group during a change of command ceremony at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, May 31.
Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, 8th Fighter Wing commander, presided over the ceremony and listed the 8th OG’s year of accomplishments under the leadership of outgoing commander, Col. Michael G. McCarthy.
Following the passing of the guidon, Franck, taking on the callsign ‘Viper’ addressed them members of the 8th OG.
“I’m humbled to join your ranks,” said Franck. “This past year has tested you in unprecedented ways, and you’ve excelled and upheld the Wolf Pack standard.”
Franck expressed gratitude for being entrusted with his position, as he thanked McCarthy for the guidance offered during their transition.
“Your tenure has set a high bar for leadership and operational excellence,” said Franck. “My aim is to build on that foundation and continue to propel the mission forward with the same courage and commitment.”
As 8th OG commander, Franck is responsible for the planning, execution, and support of the base’s deployment of fighter aircraft as they conduct conventional air-to-ground and air-to-air missions in support of armistice and wartime taskings to defend the Republic of Korea.
