CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Soldiers with the 288th Quartermaster Company ensure through their efforts that it is possible for each Soldier within the U.S. Army to have purified drinking water for every effort and operation abroad.
“Our main task was to supply LSA Steel with potable drinking water for the mobile kitchen trailer’s food and for showers,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Herculano Dennis, a water purification specialist with the 288th Quartermaster Company.
The 288th uses a Tactical Water Purification System to create and provide water during the Quartermaster Liquid Logistics Exercise, which is linked with the Combat Support Training Exercise at Warriors Cove, Camp Pendleton, California. This exercise is part of the larger CSTX taking place at Fort Hunter Liggett, California.
The TWPS is designed to turn regular, abundant ocean water into purified water ready for Soldiers' use.
“First we take it through three filtration systems, then it hits our TWPS, and once it goes through there, then it goes through a micron filtration system, which we call the MF system. After that, we take it through our reverse osmosis feed tank, and from there, it goes to our five vessels. And those are the stages of purification for our water unit,” said Dennis.
Like any exercise or operation, there are always obstacles to overcome, not only for the individual Soldier but also for the units and commands.
“Each QLLEX has to troubleshoot and work past problems,” said Dennis. “We learned with our water unit how to troubleshoot advanced problems caused by the salt water and the changing tides. These were constantly destroying our pumps, but we were able to stop that and keep us from losing water pressure.”
After a long, hot day in the sun or a frigid night of blistering wind, Soldiers can look forward to something easily taken for granted by others thanks to the efforts of the 288th.
“When you go two or three days without a hot shower or cold potable water, that is a huge morale boost when you can come back to that,” said Dennis.
